After becoming a professional in 2003, Trahan spent 2004 on the Nationwide Tour, winning the Miccosukee Championship. He was a PGA Tour rookie in 2005 and won his first PGA Tour title at the 2006 Southern Farm Bureau Classic. He won his second event at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in 2008.

Although overshadowed by Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate, D.J. made a very impressive showing in the 2008 U.S. Open, finishing tied for 4th and earning over $300,000. It was D.J.'s best finish in a major championship.
